GOVT. OF INDIA PARTIALLY INCREASES DUTY ON CKD CARS FROM 10% TO 30%
 
# The government has provided some relief by increasing the excise duty on CKD (Completely Knocked Down) cars from 10 per cent to 30 per cent and not 60 per cent as originally announced in the Union Budget for 2011-12. This means that the ruling will cause a price increase on Indian assembled cars such as the BMW 5 Series and Audi A6 to go up by as much around 4000 dollars. Into force since April 1, it may affect those involved in CKD operations in the short term sales On the other hand, the likes of Mercedes-Benz who assemble their engines for the C and E-Class at the Force Motors facility in Pune are not expected to be impacted and may benefit from it. MACRO ECONOMIC UPDATES
 
GOVT. OF INDIA RELEASES THE ESTIMATES OF INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION FOR FEB. 2011
 
# The Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 1993-94 for the month of February 2011 have been released by the Central Statistics Office of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. The General Index stands at 342.9, which is 3.6% higher as compared to the level in the month of February 2010. The cumulative growth for the period April- February, 2010-11 stands at 7.8% over the corresponding period of the previous year. To view the press note in detail please click here
 
RBI RAISED INTEREST RATE BY 0.25 PERCENT
 
# The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on the 17th of March 2011 increased the short-term lending and borrowing rates by 25 basis points (0.25 per cent ushering in an era of higher interest rates as inflation continues an unbridled run. The RBI raised each repo rate under the liquidity adjustment facility by 25 basis points from 6.5 per cent to 6.75 per cent and also increased the reverse repo rate under the LAF by 25 basis points from 5.5 per cent to 5.75 per cent with immediate effect. 13 APRIL     NEW DELHI: SEMINAR ON ANTI-COUNTERFEITING ACTION IN INDIA
 
# The Seminar is meant to provide an overview of all the means and the resources available to combat counterfeits, from a practical point of view. It will start by showing how to conduct investigations and how to gather evidence of the violations, as well as how to pro-tect Intellectual property rights in cus-toms and how to avail of the procedure for stopping a suspected shipment. The Seminar will then focus on enforcement by the Courts, starting with the civil forum then deal with the criminal enforcement route, and evaluate advantages and disadvantages of the civil or criminal option. # Healthcare has emerged to be one of the most progressive service sectors in India and is believed to be the next big thing after IT. The Indian healthcare sector is expected to become a US$ 280 billion by 2020 with spending on health estimated to grow 14 per cent annually. With a view to this the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) is organizing the Tamil Nadu Health Summit at Hottel Accord Metropolitan in Chennai. DANIELI TO BUILD STEEL PLANT NEAR CHENNAI
 
# Danieli S.p.a, Italy's biggest maker of equipments for steel production, plans to build a Euro 60 Million factory in India, as rising demand from care makers and builders spur steel makers to add capacity. The factory will be located near Chennai. According to Mr Damir Mezulic, Managing Director of Danileli's Indian unit, the initial output may start in a year and production may reach full capacity in three years. Referring to India's 2013 capacity target, a realistic number looks like 90-95 million tonnes, Mr. Mezulic said. By 2020, he seeks in keeping a range of 135-150 million tonnes, which is not bad by any standards. “Rising steel prices will push up the cost of building a steel plant and as steel is our basic raw material and if prices of steel go up, there is no way we can absorb the cost”, Mr. Mezulic said.
 
ITALY’S MASERATI TO MAKE ITS DEBUT IN INDIA
 
# Another Italian brand is making its way into India and this time around it is Maserati. Maserati officially launched its operations in India on April 6 in New Delhi with Shreyans Motors being its distributer who incidentally have been appointed the Ferrari distributor for the country a short while ago. The brand will begin operations in the two cities of New Delhi and Mumbai and will expand to other cities later. Unlike its sister-brand Ferrari, Maserati are priced a bit more reasonably, though prices will still range north of Rs 1 crore. For more information please click here
 
CNH ACQUIRES FULL OWNERSHIP OF INDIAN CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT JV
 
# CNH International, a global leader in the agricultural and construction equipment business, has acquired full ownership of L&T – CASE Equipment Pvt. Limited, an unconsolidated joint venture established in 1999 with Larsen & Toubro Limited to manufacture and sell construction and building equipment in India. The new wholly owned company will take the name Case New Holland Construction Equipment India Pvt. Limited. With this investment, CNH confirms its commitment to a strong manufacturing base for its construction equipment business at the Pithampur plant in Madhya Pradesh and also plans to continue to invest in its Case construction equipment product offering and strengthen the sales network to meet the needs of construction businesses in the important local and export markets. L & T PLASTICS IN TALKS WITH ITALIAN FIRM TO EXPAND BUSINESS
 
Indian injection press maker L&T Plastics Machinery Ltd. is investing 100 million rupees in its factory to double capacity there, and is in talks with an unnamed Italian machinery maker about jointly making molding machines in India. The Chennai-based company, one of India’s largest plastics equipment makers estimates that the overall Indian market for injection presses will increase by 20% this year. The company is in talks with an Italian press maker about forming a partnership. L&T already manufacturers some machines for the Italian firm. L&T said the expansion will double capacity at its Chennai factory to about 1,500 machines a year. For more information please click here
 
FIAT & TATA JOINT VENTURE TO REVIVE SALES AGREEMENT
 
Fiat India Automobiles Pvt. Ltd, an equal joint venture between Tata Motors Ltd and Fiat SpA, is re-working the sales and distribution arrangement for Fiat cars in India in an attempt to improve sales and strengthen the brand. Currently, both Tata and Fiat cars are sold by a dealer under one roof. With the introduction of newer models by both the companies, space in some of the showrooms has become constrained. Due to this there could be separate showroom areas for Fiat while the dealerships will remain common.
 
INDIA’S LUXURY MARKET POISED FOR MAJOR GROWTH
 
The luxury market in India is growing and experts say, by 2015 a quarter of the luxury market will be between India and China. This was highlighted at a recent conference whose theme was: “Luxury: Triggers for Growth” at the fourth edition of the Mint Luxury Conference 2011 that saw leaders of global luxury brands, top designers, policy makers and actors share their views on India’s luxury market. Setting the agenda for the rapid growth of the luxury market in India, the two-day event was attended by representatives of some of the world’s most successful luxury brands. Each speaker discussed critical issues in Indian luxury business including trends, designs and highlighted the challenges and opportunities in the growing market. INDIAN COMPANY LOOKING OUT FOR ITALIAN SUPPLIERS IN MARBLE SECTORE
 
The Lodha Group established in 1980 is India’s premiere real estate developer headquartered in Mumbai. The group is currently working on one of their biggest projects ‘World One’ - The tallest residential tower in the world. Given the requirements of this huge project they wish to import good quality marble tiles (2x2 or 3x3)(ideally) and looking for tie-up with a quarry directly (preferably) or a supplier that is large enough to meet the requirement over extended period of time. # The Department of History, Cultures of Sapienza, University of Rome and the IsIAO (Italian Institute of Africa and the Orient) in collaboration with the Manchester University are Jointly organizing an International Conference on the History and Art of India in Rome. The principle theme of the conference is to include both archeological and the history of art as well as tribal history, religions and culture. Particular attention will be given to the Dravidic tradition, where sources of the origins of some of the most important aspects of Hindu iconography may be found. Amitabh Bachchan is a bearded Superman and Shah Rukh wears the red and blue costume of Spider-Man. The Bollywood toys, a trio of Amitabh, Shah Rukh and Anil Kapoor, by David Cesaria are part of the first ever exhibi-tion of Italian neo-pop art in the country called Dadaumpop. After a show in Mumbai, the exhibi-tion titled 'Dadaumpop' is on show in Delhi and the 3D installations are now the spe-cial attraction at the exhibi-tion,  which has been put together in collaboration with the Embassy of Italy.
