INDIAN CUSTOMS UPSCALES  AGAINST COUNTERFEITING
In 2007, the Indian Government issued a regulation on the protection of the intellectual property rights that is imported into India. These rules provide a detailed procedure to be followed by the right holder or his representative as well as by Customs to block import of goods that are suspected of counterfeiting and piracy. To facilitate the use of the protective mechanism by operators, Indian customs on their electronic services portal have created a registration service for intellectual property rights with a software called Automatic Recordation and Targeting for IPR Protection (ARTS). IPR Desk in New Delhi has issued a paper (in Italian) to guide you through the process.

MACROECONOMIC UPDATES

INDIAN CENTRAL BANK RAISED INTEREST RATES
The Reserve Bank of India (Indian Central Bank) has raised interest rates in July more than expected in the face of inflation that has persistently above 10% for the past five months. The RBI lifted the repo rate, at which it lends to banks, by 25 basis points to 5.75%, which was in line with expectations, but raised the reverse repo rate, at which it absorbs excess cash from the system, by 50 basis points to 4.50%. Inflation in India emerged last year in the wake of a poor monsoon that drove up food prices but has spread broadly throughout the economy, spawning protest against a government whose voter base is predominantly poor and rural.

THE RUPEE GET’S A SYMBOL
The Symbol of Indian Rupee was approved by the Union Cabinet on 15th July, 2010. The symbol is a cross between the Roman letter R and its Hindi equivalent, and was designed by D Udaya Kumar, a young teacher at the Indian Institute of Technology. A panel of artists, officials and bankers picked the new design. The Indian government hopes it will soon be as recognizable as the dollar or the euro. The winning design is made up of half the letter R with a horizontal line on top and in between to make it also look like its equivalent in the Devanagari script, which used in a number of Indian languages including Hindi and Sanskrit. It will soon be introduced on computer keyboards and banknotes in India and is expected to take a year or two to be fully implemented. Kumar's entry was chosen from 3,000 designs competing for the currency symbol.

I.C.E. & UNCTAD PRESENT IN ROME THE WORLD INVESTMENT REPORT 2010
“INVESTING IN A LOW-CARBON ECONOMY” (in Italian)
The World Investment Report 2010 highlights a promising outlook: after a significant global FDI downturn in 2009, flows worldwide are expected to recover slightly this year, with a stronger recovery in 2011 and 2012. Countries remain receptive towards FDI, seeing it as an important external source of development finance. This year’s Report focuses on climate change, and in particular the role of transnational corporations. This twentieth anniversary edition of the World Investment Report continues the series’ tradition of serving as a leading reference for policymakers, investment promotion agencies, business, academia, civil society and others. PIANO – RENZO PIANO BUILDING WORKSHOP 1966 – 2005
Edited by Philiop Jodidio (Hardcover book)
Whereas some architects have a signature style, what sets Piano apart is that he seeks simply to apply a coherent set of ideas to new projects in extraordinarily different ways. "One of the great beauties of architecture is that each time, it is like life starting all over again," says Piano. "Like a movie director doing a love story, a Western, or a murder mystery, a new world confronts an architect with each project." This explains why it takes more than a superficial glance to recognize Piano’s fingerprints on such various projects as the Pompidou Center in Paris (1971-77), the Kansai airport in Osaka, Japan (1990-94), and the Tjibaou Cultural Center in Nouméa, New Caledonia (1993-1998). This stunning monograph, illustrated by photographs, sketches, and plans, covers Piano’s career to date.
