MACRO ECONOMIC UPDATES

INDIA'S MANUFACTURING PMI DECELERATES SLIGHTLY IN DECEMBER 2014

#India's manufacturing sector decelerated marginally in December as a slowdown in domestic order flows led to slower output growth, according to an HSBC survey. The HSBC India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) - a measure of factory production - dropped slightly from 51.3 in November to 50.7 in December. Despite a slight deceleration, the manufacturing sector activity expanded for the second consecutive month. A PMI reading of above 50 differentiates growth from contraction. The Indian manufacturing sector ended 2013 on an encouraging footing. Operating conditions improved for the second successive month in December, as both output and new orders increased. Consequently, firms raised their workforce numbers further in December, the survey noted. For more information please click here

FISCAL DEFICIT IN APRIL-NOV TOUCHES 94% OF RS. 5.42 LAKH BUDGETARY TARGET

#India's fiscal deficit in the April-November period reached 94% of the targeted budgetary estimate of Rs 5.42 lakh crore, raising concerns that India may well overshoot its ambitious target of containing the deficit at 4.8% of gross domestic production (GDP). Finance minister P Chidambaram has said that fiscal deficit target of 4.8% is a "red line" that "will not be crossed". But as the country's growth rate slipped to a decade-low 5% in the year ended March from an average of 8% over the past decade, both rating agencies and economists have expressed fears that the red line will be breached. RATING AGENCY CRISIL SAYS, REVENUE GROWTH BOTTOMED OUT

#Stating that more sectors will report revenue expansion in the December quarter, rating agency Crisil today said revenue growth has bottomed out, but margin growth may take more time. "Revenues, after declining for nine successive quarters, rebounded in the September quarter. However, revenue growth was largely on account of export-oriented sectors benefiting from the weak rupee. But from the third quarter of this fiscal, we expect a gradual recovery in more sectors," Crisil President (Research) Mukesh Agarwal said in a research note. He said apart from the export-oriented firms like IT, pharma and textiles, the domestic consumption-linked sectors will see moderate improvement as rural demand is expected to pick up after good monsoons. INDIA ADDS ITALY'S ENI TO LIST OF FOREIGN FIRMS THAT CAN SELL CRUDE OIL

#India has added Italy's ENI to a list of foreign firms that can sell crude oil at official prices to state refiners, sources said, in the first such revision to the list since 2001. The move comes as India expands its sources for oil to meet soaring energy demand. The country's procurement choices are widening as a shale boom in the United States has led to suppliers scrambling to tap alternative Asian markets such as China and India. A government committee in May 2013 called for revising the list of companies that can sell oil to state refiners in view of the changing market scenario and due to mergers and acquisitions.
