MACRO ECONOMIC UPDATES

INDIA’S INDUSTRIAL OUTPUT AT 6.3% IN APRIL 2011

#India's industrial output growth in April 2011 was 6.3% compared 13.1 percent in the same month last year, easing pressure on the central bank ahead of an interest rate decision. The figures are based on a revised index including newer components and weight ages to reflect more recent production behavior. Output in manufacturing, which accounts for 80 percent of the index, rose 6.9 percent in April 2011, down from 14.4 percent growth a year earlier, according to the new index. Industrial activity in India has slowed even as the central bank is on an aggressive monetary tightening policy, hiking interest rates to tame inflation, which is the highest in all major Asian economies.. INFLATION FORCES INDIA TO RAISE INTEREST RATE

# High inflation has forced India to raise benchmark-lending rates for the 10th time in 18 months as its central bank struggles to curb rising prices in the absence of tough fiscal action. India has the highest inflation of any major emerging markets. In May, inflation was 9.1 per cent, almost double as compared to China. In order to control this The RBI on the 16th of June raised the repo rate – the rate at which the central bank lends to commercial banks – to 7.5 per cent, while the reverse repo was increased to 6.5 per cent. It dispelled fears about any sharp or broad-based slowdown in the world’s fastest growing large economy after China.
