MACROECONOMIC UPDATES

INDIA'S INFLATION ACCELERATED TO 7.4% IN APRIL 2012

# India's inflation accelerated to a worse than expected 7.2 percent in April, on rising food and manufacturing price. March 2012 inflation was 6.9 percent. The government revised February inflation to 7.4 percent from an earlier estimate of 7.0 percent. The data reinforces the conundrum facing India's central bank, which is under pressure to cut rates to boost growth despite persistent inflation. A fall in industrial output added to the gloom about India's economy, which is growing at its slowest pace in over two years. Food prices rose 10.5 percent in April from a year ago, the data showed. Inflation for manufactured products quickened to 5.1 percent in April 2012 from 4.9 in March 2012.

INDIAN RUPEE HITS LIFETIME LOW AGAINST THE DOLLAR VALUE

# The Indian rupee hit a fresh all-time low against the dollar on Wednesday 16th May, as risk averse global investors wary of India's twin deficits drowned out central bank efforts to stem the currency's slide. The rupee hit 54.44 against the dollar, breaching its prior low of 54.39 set Dec. 15 2011, according to FactSet data. The slide helped send the benchmark Sensex index down 1.8 percent. The Reserve Bank of India sold about $20 billion between September and March to prop up the rupee, but India's falling foreign exchange reserves limit the bank's ability to intervene decisively, Abishek Goenka, chief executive of India Forex Advisors, said in a research note Wednesday, 16th May. INDIA'S MARCH INDUSTRIAL OUTPUT FALLS UNEXPECTED 3.5%

# India's March industrial output fell 3.5 percent from a year ago, worse than expected on weak manufacturing and investment. Manufacturing activity fell to 4.4% and capital goods production - a sign of crucial investment activity plunged by 21%, burying hopes of a quick recovery for Asia's third-largest economy. For the year ending in March 2012, industrial output grew 2.8 percent, sharply lower than 8.2 percent during the prior fiscal year. The weak growth complicates matters for India's central bank, which faces enormous political pressure to stoke growth, despite persistent inflation and soaring deficits. INDIA'S SUPRISE RATE CUT IS FIRST IN 3 YEARS

# India's central bank cut its key interest rate by a bigger-than-expected half percentage point Tuesday 17th April, the first cut in three years, and warned that stalled reforms are diminishing the growth potential of Asia's third-biggest economy. The bank said it decided to cut the rate because economic growth has slowed to below what it believes is its long-term trend rate, which in turn is contributing to a moderation in core inflation. The last interest rate cut was in April 2009. Between March 2010 and October 2011, the bank waged a lonely battle against inflation, raising interest rates by 3.75 points in 13 consecutive rate hikes.
