MACRO ECONOMIC UPDATES
 
INDIA'S CENTRAL BANK HIKES INTEREST RATE MORE THAN EXPECTED TO TAME INFLATION
 
# India's central bank raised its main interest rates more than expected, springing the fifth hike in six months from January 2010 to tame inflation in Asia's third-biggest economy. But it hiked the reverse repo rate - the rate it pays to banks for deposits - more aggressively than forecast, increasing it by 50 basis points to 5.0 per cent. Inflation dipped to a seven-month low in August, but is still seen as too high. The measures undertaken should help contain inflation without disrupting the country's economic growth, the bank said. THE BOMBAY STOCK EXCHANGE (BSE) SENSEX ABOVE 20,000 POINTS
 
# The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), the 30-share sensitive index (Sensex) shot up to 20,088.96 points, the highest in 32 months. This was for the first time since Jan 17, 2008, that the index breached the 20,000-point mark. Last week of September, the sensex gained 311.35 points or 1.59 percent at 19,906.1 points over the previous closure at 19,594.75 points, with foreign funds to the tune of $373.25 million pouring into the markets. These funds have invested over $3 billion in the Indian equities market, taking their net buying of equities to $11.59 billion in the current calendar year. For more information, click here.

SEBI MAY ANNOUNCE NEW TAKEOVER RULES WITH EFFECT FROM NEXT FISCAL
 
# Market regulator SEBI is likely to announce new norms for mergers and acquisitions (M&As). The regulator is in the process of collating comments received on its public discussion paper on the new Takeover Code which, among other things, proposes to bring in minority shareholders at par with promoters in terms of price received in M&A deals. The recommendations made by the Takeover Regulatory Advisory Committee include raising the public offer trigger to 25 percent, from the existing 15 percent. Besides, the panel has suggested that the acquirer make an open offer for the entire 100 percent stake in case its holding crosses the 25 per cent threshold. For more information, click here

TATA ACQUIRES 80% STAKE IN TRILIX
 
# Tata Motors has acquired an 80% stake in Italian design and engineering company Trilix, based in Turin. The Indian OEM has paid €1.85m (US$2.54m) for the stake. The remaining 20% of Trilix is equally held by its promoters Bryn Jones, Federico Muzio and Justyn Norek. Tata notes that the acquisition is part of its overall aim to bring styling/design capabilities up to global standards. Trilix provides a range of automotive design and engineering services, including styling, architecture, packaging, surfacing, macro and micro feasibility, and detailed engineering development. ILVA SARONNO JV WITH MODI
 
# To enter the Indian spirits market, Italian spirits maker Illva Saronno has signed a joint venture with the Umesh Modi Group, which owns Modi Sugar. The 50:50 venture, christened Modi Illva, will first launch Illva's luxury vodka brand, Artic, in the Indian market. The joint venture plans to bring in Illva's entire portfolio including Disaronno, Tia Maria, Isolabella and Sambuca in India over the next three years. Illva Saronno also markets Wine brands including Vini Corvo, Cantine Florio and Duca di Salaparuta. ITALIAN LL GENOMICS SPA GRANTS LICENCE TO GLENMARK PHARMA
 
# Glenmark Pharmaceuticals (GPL) wholly owned subsidiary Glenmark Pharmaceuticals S.A. (GPSA) has been granted an exclusive, worldwide license to LLG entire intellectual property portfolio in the TrkA field by Lay Line Genomics S.p.A. (LLG). The licensed assets include BXL1H5 which is a novel monoclonal antibody that binds to TrkA receptors. The deal is of specific significance, because Glenmark has not only in-licensed a preclinical, unique monoclonal antibody, but also has the sole and exclusive license to commercialize monoclonal antibodies against TrkA receptor for pain. The development of this novel biologic entity (NBE) will be done by Glenmark biologic R&D centre in Switzerland, which is focused on discovering and developing NBEs. ERMENEGILDO ZEGNA SETS UP JV WITH RELIANCE BRANDS
 
Italy's Ermenegildo Zegna Group said it has set up a joint venture with Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Brands to explore opportunities in the domestic market. For this purpose, Zegna South Asia Private Ltd that is operational since 2006 will be reorganized as the joint venture with the Ermenegildo Zegna Group holding 51 per cent and Reliance Brands holding 49 per cent, Reliance Brands. GITANJALI GEMS AQUIRES MORELLATO STAKE
 
Mumbai-based jewellery major Gitanjali Gems Ltd has strategically acquired the remaining 50% stake in its Indian joint venture company Morellato India Pvt Ltd for an undisclosed sum. Misrelate India was a 50:50 JV between Gitanjali Gems and Morellato & Sector Group of Italy. Morellato is an Italian jeweller and watch maker, and also licensee for fashion groups such as Cavalli, Miss Sixty and Moschino. FONDAZIONE ALTAGAMMA GEAR UP FOR BIG PUSH IN INDIA
 
Fondazione Altagamma, a body of luxury brands of Italy will announce their investments for expanding and strengthening presence in India. Fondazione Altagamma, which has 70 members, expect the total number of single brand stores of Italian firms in India to touch 200 by 2020 from 30 at present. There members include Bvlgari, Fendi, Ferrari Gucci, Max Mara, Valentino, Venini and Versace among others. JET AIRWAYS SOON A DIRECT FLY TO MILAN
 
The ministry of civil aviation has approved a proposal by Jet Airways (India) Ltd to fly to Milan in Italy and has also given its permission for the carrier to increase its frequency of flights to short-haul international destinations such as Dubai, Bangkok and Colombo from various Indian cities. INDIA TO HOST F1 RACE IN OCTOBER 2011
 
India has been handed over a chance to host its inaugural Formula 1 race in Oct 2011. The World Motor Sport Council released the schedule for the 2011 Formula 1 season, which is set to be the longest one in the sport's history with a total of 20 races 2005 and 2010 have been the years with the longest seasons so far with 19 races each. The Indian Grand Prix will be part of this historical season provided the circuit being built near the national capital gets completed and passes the final inspection before the scheduled time - July 2011. INDIA TO BECOME 2ND LARGEST STEEL PRODUCER BY 2015
 
According to the Ministry of Steel, India has emerged as the fifth-largest producer of steel in the world. At present production rates, India will soon emerge as the second-largest producer of crude steel by 2015. The Indian steel consumption grew about 8 per cent in the financial year ending March 2010. The main driving force behind such a projection is boost in demand from the automobile, infrastructure, and railways sectors. The world's highest per capita consumer is Italy, which uses approximately 30 kilograms of stainless steel per person each year. The global average per-person consumption is 9.4 kilograms. 'INDIAN' DHRUV COPTER GETS ITALIAN MAKEOVER
 
The Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) has been widely regarded as a triumph of indigenous military rotorcraft design and manufacturing. HAL has brought in a consultant: Italian aerospace propulsion major, Avio. The Italian consultants will scrutinize the Dhruv's IDS to diagnose the problem. Avio will start by building a single HAL-designed IDS in Avio's facilities in Italy, using their own materials and tools. They will then test-run this for 400-500 hours; if it works perfectly, it would be evident that the flaw lies in HAL's manufacturing, rather than the IDS design. For more information, click here

13 - 17 OCTOBER INDIAN FESTIVAL OF DURGA PUJA
 
Durga Puja is one of the most popular Hindu festivals which begins on, 2010. Durga is the Goddess of divine power against all evils. The tableau of Durga with her four children - Kartik, Ganesh, Saraswati and Lakshmi, representing respectively the Protector, the Initiator of the puja, Knowledge and the Provider - signifies the complete manifestation of the goddess. The first recorded Durga Puja seems to have taken place in Nadia district in or around 1606. The inauguration starts on Mahashasthi. The main puja is for three days - Mahasaptami, Mahaastami, Mahanavami. Three days of Mantras and Shlokas and Arati and offerings - needs an expert priest to do this kind of Puja. In the last day, the ima ges are carried in processions around the locality and finally is immersed in a nearby river or lake. Vijaya Dashami is an event celebrated all over the country. This puja is also known as Navaratri in other parts of India which is celebrated for nine nights.
 
16 OCTOBER MUMBAI: LECTURE-DEMONSTRATION
 
The annual Italian language Week, now in its tenth year, aims to promote Italian language and culture in the world. The theme chosen by the Italian Ministry of Foreign affairs for 2010 is: "Una lingua per amica: l'italiano nostro e degli altri" (A language as a friend: our Italian and the Italian of others). This year the Italian Language Week in New Delhi will be celebrated with a series of events coordinated by the Istituto Italiano di Cultura. 18 OCTOBERNEW DELHI: QUIZ ITALIA
 
# Inauguration in New Delhi of the X Italian Language Week with QUIZ ITALIA: An interesting and exciting quiz aimed at increasing knowledge of Italy - the land, its people, their history and culture - among the youth of India. The top schools of Delhi and NCR are being invited to participate in a contest that will test the knowledge of students about Italy and encourage them to learn and know more about the country. The questions, presented in a variety of interesting formats, would be drawn from subjects like History, Geography, the Italian people and their culture, Literature, Art and Architecture, Business and Economy, Science and Technology, Sporting achievements, Cuisine, Folk and traditional Arts and Crafts. 19 OCTOBER NEW DELHI: LECTURER'S DAY
 
This year's theme is "Una lingua per amica: l'italiano nostro e degli altri" (A language as a friend: our Italian and the Italian of others) aimed at young learners in Italy and abroad. The competition is organized by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for students of Italian all over the world. In Delhi it is being organized for the students of the University of Delhi and the Istituto Italiano di Cultura. The students are requested to write the conclusion of an unpublished novel Passera' anche questo written by Claudio Magris and La fuga di Nardino by Roberto Alajmo. 21 – 24 OCTOBER DELHI: RENDEZVOUS 2010
 
Celebrating the Golden Jubilee year of IIT Delhi this year, Rendezvous 2010, with an aim to bring international flavour to the celebrations, will be inaugurated with a concert by Italian artists Dr. Francesca Cassio (Vocal) Mo Simone Schirru (Guitar) and Pandit Mohan Shyam Sharma (Pakhawaj). By far the biggest youth platform in the whole of North India, Rendezvous has been witnessing with each passing year a huge youth turnout, attracting more than 3 lakh youngsters. 21- 24 OCTOBER JODHPUR: ITALIAN MUSICIANS AT RIFF - RAJASTHAN INTERNATIONAL FOLK FESTIVAL
 
Rajasthan international folk festival brings a concert by Francesca Cassio (vocal) Mo Simone Schirru (guitar) in collaboration with CRN Productions Centre for Performing Arts, Jodhpur with musicians from Manganiar and Langas communities. Francesca Cassio (singer) and Simone Schirru (guitar player) are Italians trained in Western and Indian music. For this evening they will perform traditional compositions based on a combination of Italian folk tunes and Indian melodies from Rajasthan. The music will take the audience on a journey through time, where the tradition of oral improvisation is still a very fundamental part of the interpretation.
 
THE CENTRE OF VISUAL ARTS OF PIETRASANTA INVITES INDIAN STUDENTS TO SUMBIMT THEIR APPLICATION
 
The two-year residential Specialization Course in Design aims to make a professional capable of producing innovative and original solutions and managing the development process of the artistic project. NIRAKAZHCHA TO BE DUBBED IN ITALIAN
 
Malayalam movie Nirakazhcha, written and directed by debutant Aneesh J. Karanad, is going to be dubbed in Italian language. The director informed that he got the offer following the recent screening of the movie at the 'Maratea International Film Festival' in Italy. The story of the movie revolves around an Italian painter and the role is played by an Italian television and stage actor named Vincenzo Bocciarelli. The director was quoted saying that he would start work on the dubbing of the film in Italian language. When the film gets totally ready, it will be screened in 600 theaters in Italy and it will also be aired on a television channel there. For more information, click here

The drama is based on an autobiographical book of the same title by Cesare Gavino Ledda. The film ends again in documentary fashion as Gavino Ledda narrates why he wrote this book and what Sardinian children may expect as inhabitants of a rural area with close ties to the land. The film received awards at the Cannes and Berlin Film Festivals and won the David di Donatello and Nastro d'Argento awards. Taddeo's life at home is no less unusual, considering that his mother is being led on by the family physician while his grandfather has fallen head over heels for a well-built piano teacher.
