RULES & REGULATIONS

GOVERNMENT TO RAISE FDI INSURANCE CAP

#The government is planning a host of measures in the coming days, including the politically bold move of raising the foreign direct investment (FDI) cap in insurance companies to 49% from the present 26%, as well as a multi-billion dollar mega-fund to support infrastructure projects such as expressways, ports and railways. Government sources told HT that the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh-headed Union Cabinet is likely to consider some of these proposals in its meeting scheduled for later this week. A proposal to set up a national investment board — a brainchild of finance minister P Chidambaram — empowered to speed-up projects stuck at various stages of regulatory and procedural approvals, is also likely to be given the go-ahead this week, sources said. .For more information please click here

NATIONAL INVESTMENT BOARD MAY GET POWERS TO SPEED UP GREEN CLEARANCE

# The proposed National Investment Board (NIB), a high-powered body to provide single window clearance to large projects, may be armed with overriding powers to speed up environment-related clearances. Sources close to the development said the Board has moved a step closer to becoming a reality, with the Cabinet slated to take up the issue soon.Originally mooted in an outlook document as a modification to the existing Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure, the proposal for setting up a Board was mooted by Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, while intervening during the deliberation of Full Planning Commission meeting on September 15. He had talked about considering the need to set up a mechanism at the Cabinet level to take final decisions on major investment proposals especially in the infrastructure sector. MACROECONOMIC UPDATES

INFLATION IN INDIA NEAR 3 YEAR LOW TO 6.87 PERCENT

#India's wholesale inflation unexpectedly fell in July to a near three-year low but economists doubt the drop will be enough to persuade the RBI to cut interest rates at its September meeting to try to revive the struggling economy. Inflation dropped to 6.87 percent in July from 7.25 percent in June as domestic petrol and vegetable prices fell in July. But global oil prices have been rising since then and drought in some parts of India is threatening fresh inflationary pressures. n addition, core inflation, which excludes food and fuel prices, rose in July to 5.44 percent from 4.9 percent in June, economists estimated. .For more information please click here

INDIA FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT SLUMPS 78% IN JUNE 2012

# Foreign direct investment into India slumped 78% in June, reflecting the weakening confidence of overseas investors. FDI during the month fell to $1.24 billion from $5.65 billion a year earlier. For the April-June period--the first quarter of the fiscal year--FDI fell 67% to $4.42 billion. The fall doesn't come as a surprise as overseas investors remain wary due to a delay in economic reforms and uncertainty in tax laws, which have damped India's growth prospects. New Delhi's plans to introduce a retrospective tax on overseas merger deals involving Indian assets as well as a new rule to check tax avoidance have dented investor confidence. ITALY IN THE WORLD ECONOMY
Report for 2011 - 2012 Summary

#The modest cyclical recovery that began in 2010 came to a halt in the second half of last year. With the external environment becoming increasingly unstable, confidence collapsing and the restrictive measures taken to cope with the sovereign debt crisis beginning to bite, domestic demand contracted, especially the investment component. If GDP growth for the year was positive though just barely (0.4 per cent), this was entirely due to the contribution of net exports, whose performance benefited from the crisis-induced abrupt slowdown in imports. The darkening of the world economic outlook, with the effects of the European crisis now also touching the emerging markets, makes short-term projections more uncertain. The current year looks set to continue to be one of deep recession, with a possible upturn put off to 2013.please click here

(India’s first-ever feature-length film, Raja Harishchandra, a silent movie, was made in 1913.) A short, burly man with long black hair tied neatly behind his head, Mr. Dahiya, 33, says he loves Bollywood. But when he came to Mumbai in 2008, he was surprised to see there was “no major Bollywood presence in Mumbai” – at least not in a visual sense. For more information click here
