MACROECONOMIC UPDATES

INDIAN ECONOMY EXPANDS 8.8 PER CENT IN THE FIRST QUARTER 2010
The Indian economy grew by 8.8 per cent in the first quarter of this fiscal year (April-July 2010), the fastest pace in around three years, despite partial withdrawal of economic stimulus packages. The growth numbers prompted some industry groups to forecast that the economy would revert to high expansion mode of 9 per cent in 2010-11, after two successive years of slowdown due to the impact of global financial meltdown. While the economy clocked 8.6 per cent growth in the March quarter, it had registered 6 per cent in the same quarter last fiscal. Private consumption grew 3.8 percent and not 0.3 percent, government expenditure was raised to 14.2 percent from a negative 0.7 percent, and investment grew 7.6 percent instead of 3.7 percent as originally reported by the Central Statistics  Office (CSO).

INDIA'S INDUSTRIAL OUTPUT GREW 13.8 PERCENT IN JULY 2010
India's industrial output grew 13.8 percent in July far more than expected rebounding from a 13-month low in June and adding to pressure on the central bank to hike interest rates to curb inflation. Manufacturing, which has the greatest weight in India's index of industrial production, grew 15.0 percent during the month, up from a downwardly revised 5.8 percent in June. Capital goods output surged 63.0 percent and consumer durables production grew 22.1 percent over last July. The government revised down June's industrial output growth from 7.1 percent to 5.8 percent.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

INDIA’S INFLATION LOWS TO 8.5% IN THE MONTH OF AUGUST 2010
India's headline inflation has slow down to 8.5 percent in August from a revised 9.8 percent in July. This is due also to a change in the way the index is calculated. Under the old data series, August inflation would have been 9.5 percent. This time last year, inflation was just 0.3 percent.  Despite two months of slowing, inflation remains much higher than policymakers would like and some economists said the central bank's four interest rate hikes this year should have done more to cool prices.

RULES AND REGULATIONS

GOVERNMENT PROPOSES LOOSENING FOREIGN INVESTMENT RULES
The Indian government has released a discussion paper on whether to scrap existing rules that force foreign companies who have tied up with an Indian firm to seek approval before expanding outside the joint venture. Foreign companies who tied up with Indian firms before 2005 must ask the government's permission to make new investments in the same field and prove the new venture would not hurt its Indian partner's interests. Foreign companies who came to India after 2005, the year the policy was last reviewed, are already exempt.

INDIA REMOVES RADIAL TYRE IMPORT LICENSE
India decided to eliminate import licensing requirements for radial tyres by moving the product back to the 'free' category after keeping radial tyres on a so-called 'restricted' list for nearly 18 months. This is positive news for the EU tyre industry (as well as for importers in India) as it should result in an increase in EU exports, which have been affected by the measure since 2008. The aim is to reach a situation where India's import license and fees are fully in line with the relevant WTO provisions. For further information click here

BOOK: PARMIGIANO REGGIANO: A SYMBOL OF CULTURE AND CIVILIZATION
By Franco Bonilauri
Among Italian cheese, of the oldest tradition, Parmigiano Reggiano can now be considered as a symbol of culture and civilization. The whole production comes from a restricted area - according to the law that on 1955 defined the standard of this cheese: the provinces of Modena, Parma and Reggio Emilia and partially Bologna and Mantova. It is in fact due also to the geographical position of the production zone that the Parmigiano Reggiano is a cheese absolutely unique and impossible to imitate. This book was created to commemorate and give homage to the Consortium of Parmigiano Reggiano for its 60th year. This book tells the whole story on Parmigiano, from the origin till now and takes the reader to an imaginary journey through the production districts, landscape and sites of tradition with beautiful pictures by Andrea Pistolesi. Now available for consultation at the Italian Trade Commission, Mumbai. For more info contact Ms. Jocelyn Fernandes: mumbai@ice.it
